Becoming a Nutritionist

A person interested in becoming a nutritionist should have a Bachelor's degree in food & nutrition, dietetics, or food service systems management. As per the recommendations of the US Department of Labor, aspiring nutritionists should also know about subjects like nutrition, food, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physiology, microbiology, and institutional management.

Nutritionists are not legally protected in countries like the US and UK, and only few states have given recognition to the title. Thus, one may have to go for a degree of a 'dietitian'. Getting a master's that is recognized by the 'Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists' (CBNS) would help a lot in the growth of a nutritionist's career. Those with a master's degree are eligible for appearing an exam required to become a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS).

Apart from the formal education mentioned above, one has to have an innate interest in preparing meals, obtaining as much knowledge as possible about dieting, various kinds of foods, their effect on our body, etc. Taking the advice of experienced people working in this field would help a lot.

  • Public Health Nutritionist: These generally work for the promotion of well-being and health of the public. Public health nutritionists can work for the government, charity organizations, primary care trusts, and even in the food industry.
  • Sports and Exercise Nutritionist: These nutritionists work with athletes, and advise them about the diet to be taken to maintain their fitness and performance levels.
  • Industry Nutritionist: These can work in different sectors, such as retailing, food and drink manufacturing, medical food companies, etc.
